Momentum-Based Planning: Such a better way!

I’ve tried a lot of ways to plan out my days. Calendars, day planners, lists, charts and tons of apps have been developed to help us manage our time better. But I haven’t found anything that’s actually helped me FEEL better about my days, make decisions better or gain confidence that what I was doing was the best use of my time.

I’ve been really good about chunking my time and “getting things done”. And for the most part its worked to keep me productive even while I felt the pressure of a busy schedule.

Recently, however, I found Alex Charfen’s Momentum Planner and it’s changed my perspective on what a daily planning system can do for me. I want it to do the same for you.

Alex developed the Momentum Planner and the Momentum-Based Planning system after more than 20 years consulting to the Fortune 500 and entrepreneurs of every experience level, from founders and CEOs to startups and entrepreneurs. The goal of this system is to help you get clear about your vision of the future, and connect it to your day-to-day activities. This helps you understand how to win each and every day, and feel good about it too.

Here’s how…

If you’re like me, you’re highly future-focused, meaning you have a strong vision of your future and what you want to accomplish. But you may struggle when it comes to making daily progress toward that vision. In fact, I’ve struggled more than once with knowing what to do on a day-to-day basis, or if it’s even the best use of my time. All this while being highly scheduled with my calendar. It was almost as I didn’t know what to do next even when I had my plan.

My planning system was failing me. I wasn’t enjoying the planning process because I’m the kind of person who likes to be doing things, creating results and driving toward the huge contribution I want to make in the world. When I get an idea, I’m want to run with it, figure out details later and then see it through to the end.

So there needed to be a planning system that’s lightweight, simple and effective. Unfortunately, to-do lists and calendars become endless sources of pressure and noise for people like us, because we have so many responsibilities, commitments and initiatives that need our focus, energy and time.

The structure I needed for my life and business

Your planner or planning system should generate momentum in the process, not take it away. Momentum-Based Planning is a system that gives you momentum, while also taking away constraint. It does this by taking focus away from tracking activities, to-do lists and calendar items, and zeroing in on your intention for each day. So let me show you how it works…

Like I mentioned earlier, I want you to take advantage of this planning system too. As an ambassador and initial trainee in Momentum-Based Planning, Alex has let me offer you a limited-time offer to join in this training at a low, introductory price. At a 10,000 ft. level – here’s a progression of steps you’ll go through each morning. With the Momentum Journal, this will help you connect to your intention, areas where you’re uncomfortable, activities for the day, what you’re grateful for and where you won in the day.

What is my intention for the day?

Write down what you want to get out of the day. Think about what would make you feel like you succeeded at the end of the day. It’s important to understand that this isn’t a to-do list. What you write down here are not activities, but the intention you’ll set and achieve for the day.

Where was I uncomfortable yesterday?

This is a key differentiator of the Momentum-Based Planning system. Focus on identifying and offloading items and areas where you felt uncomfortable the previous day. How could yesterday have been better? What situations went poorly and how could they have been improved? Here you can voice frustrations, think about how to offload them, and prevent issues from persisting day after day.

To Do

Having identified your intention and where you were uncomfortable, your to-do stops being overwhelming. It’s now both actionable and energizing, and focused around achieving your intention or eliminating where you were uncomfortable.

Where did you win today?

We don’t often take the time to recognize our daily achievements. Small or large, listing out where we “won” in the day provides us with increasing amounts of encouragement and motivation, day after day.

What are you grateful for?

This isn’t always easy, especially on tough days. But it’s an essential practice for closing out your day on a positive note by remembering the blessings you have in your life.
