An Armful of Pain and the Word Intensity – a Rant

by | Sep 8, 2011 | Business in General, My Everyday Life, Personal Development | 16 comments

The last few months of my life have been INTENSE. Seriously intense. I created and launched 2 products, took on a new opportunity and increased my coaching client load. This all started with the launch of Mark Hoverson’s Irresistible Info Blueprint Product of which I purchased, implemented and won a spot in his Caffeine Product Contest for my WordPress Express product. You can read more about the contest in my post, “I Made it on the Boat!”. In 8 days I came up with the concept, content and delivered the product with sales.

There I was in Austin with the 10 Caffeine Product Winners as well as some of the top industry gurus. My personal mentor, Jonathan Budd was there, of course Mark Hoverson was there (this was his idea) as well as Daegan Smith (who I think is a stellar individual), The Magnetic Sponsoring Crew and the MLSP Boys – all so very kind and welcoming. I could go on and on as to who was there but I’ll save that for another post. Just know, everyone was awesome.

ANYWAY…..after Austin, Texas where I was stranded for an extra day due to a plane cancellation I rushed home to a call with the Joint Venture Manager of Success Etc. which is a Groupon Like site for personal development and information products run by Russell Brunson and his Team. They decided they want to run my product on their site, which I know winning the contest helped me with. From there I spent the rest of the month of August preparing my second product to run as part of their promotion in September. More will come later on my second product as it isn’t officially launched to the General Public, yet.

Mind you, all of this in between family obligations, my coaching students, consulting projects and network marketing opportunity. INTENSE.

What does this have to do with arm pain and intensity as in the title? Well, those of you who know me personally, know that I am kind, sweet, sometimes shy yet very social and things I love include napping and sleep along with volunteering in my kids school and community.

So here I am in the middle of life and a busy time, when my right arm decides to go out at the end of July. Go out? What this means is that I hurt my right arm and shoulder area from spending so much time on the computer in my driven intense product creation mode. Since this mode has not let up I’ve continued to be in pain for about 7 weeks with visits to my chiropractor and now I’ve recently started massage to work on the muscle and help it relax. Occupational Injury? I’ll say yes, but when you’re self employed, you don’t get workman’s comp for that.

But you know what? It is ok. I know my arm will get better because the last two intense months are changing to a bit slower typing time. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been at a 4-5 pain level on a scale from 1-10 for the last few weeks. Constant and almost unbearable at times. It hurts to type, it hurts to sleep. And this long post is going to cause me to need some ice. I just couldn’t not write this post. I needed to share these words and this story with you my dear friends. It’s been on my mind all week. (I should have just done a video!)

Back to the Story. Yes, I’ll have typing to do on a regular basis but since the products are now in maintenance mode, it’s a whole lot less. Instead I get to spend a bunch of time on the phone with new students in strategy sessions and I can back to my prospecting and lead generation as I’m not heads down in product creation mode.

Why do I tell you this and why should you care? I tell you because these past two months have been about mindset mastery. I made a decision that I was going to be on that boat and I was obsessed with it. For the Success Etc promotion I was obsessed with making it a great value for the buyer and a success for both partners. I set my mind to it and used my inner drive to get it done. Remember I told you I like to nap and sleep? Well, I’ve been getting up at 4am to get quiet time and work on content when the family is asleep. I’ve done that for about 8 weeks. Yes, I’m a little punchy by 5pm but I have a goal. I’ve had a handful of late midnight nights and then up at 5am. (Those who know me know I like to be asleep by 9pm and get  full 7-8 hours).

My first point in this is that success comes from work. And that means sacrifice. Most people say they want to work hard to achieve their dreams but when push comes to shove, they really aren’t ready to work that hard or they give up when something gets in the way (like technology or tools). And damn straight some of this stuff is confusing and takes time to learn if you’ve never done it. And you have to find a teacher or coach.

I’ve had to learn new WordPress themes and membership plugins, new shopping cart tools and affiliate tools and so on. I’ve needed to get graphics done, learn how to create recorded content, etc.  A lot of moving parts. But I did it. This means I’ve quit watching TV and I’ve given up some sleep (favorite thing, remember?) But it is worth it because I am seeing financial results as well as positive results from my students achievement. And the best thing is that I’ve been able to hear the pride from my husband who has never really been able to explain to others what I do. 🙂

My second point. I am no better than anyone who reads this post. I started knowing NOTHING in August 2009. I did know my way around a computer and the Internet, which helped but I knew nothing about terminology: traffic, info products, affiliate marketing, upsells, etc. I was a traditional, brick and mortar marketer for 20+ years.

My third point. If you want to succeed in this industry you can. There is no magic bullet or system. The Internet is a tool, a phenomenal too. The rest is up to you – and that all starts with your mindset and your willingness to learn. It will NOT be easy at times. It is what you do when it is challenging that matters. Do you persevere and keep going? Do you whine and stop in paralysis and fear? Are you willing to do what it takes? And if you’re willing, are your ready to sacrifice your favorite things and get out of your comfort zone and really do what it takes? Honestly, most people aren’t. I’ve witnessed it first hand so many times in my 20+ years in business. I don’t mean that to be harsh. Well, in a way I do. I want this post to be a wake up call.

I am NO better than you. I will just out work most people out there to achieve my goals and dreams. That’s the only difference.

A few years ago I ran for political office. 21 months of my life with long days. One of my mentors had a saying on the campaign trail: “If they’re working, we’re working. If they’re sleeping, we’re working”. This from a man who was in the US House of Representatives for 6 terms.

The good thing is we all have a choice. We all have free will. We just need to decide how we want to use it.

As always, I appreciate your comments below and would love to hear from you. And please share this post as it may help someone you know.

All the best! I am off to ice my arm.

Hi Vanessa, my 1st time visiting your blog here. I enjoy your anecdotal style! I resonate with what you’ve shared here, just because the tools work doesn’t mean they’re magic buttons. I think it’s important that we, as the professionals, truly help others to understand that so that they may properly align their expectations with reality. When we can come to that point of clarity and actually give ourselves the room we require to be proficient, our success begins to climb!

Thanks Cat for your comment. I do try to write as though I am talking to m friends. I hope you’ll visit again soon.

Hi Vanessa, Great Post! Very inspiring. I completely understand the VERY late nights and early mornings. But it is so worth it. Congratulations on winning the Hoverson contest!!

    • VaNessa Duplessie

Hey Melinda, Thanks for stopping by. I am glad my rant was an inspiration to you. I was hoping it would motivate readers. If I can do it – they can too.

Vanessa… yeah, you’re a trooper, no question. I remember during the contest launch you were going to buy plane tickets as part of visualizing your success and hoping you made it in the end. You set your intentions strong and did what ever you needed to do to get there. And you did.

What an example of what it means to work, sacrifice and stop whining.

I’ve burned many a midnight oil myself. I’ve stayed home when others went out because I committed to doing a certain thing before I goofed off. I treated my business like a business and of course, when you do that, it pays like a business.

Clearly your actions and mindset are opening doors and opportunities that are setting you up for life. You go girl!

    Hi Vanessa,

Firstly, congratulations on making it onto ‘the boat’! You’ve given a truly inspiring example for others to follow. I love how you’ve shared all of the new tech skills you had to learn in order to pull your product together in such a short time, as it really drives home that none of this stuff just magically happens! As you’ve said, it’s darn hard work and then some.

Mindset and willingness to learn is such a biggie. So many people put things into the ‘too hard’ basket without even taking the first step in the learning process. And yet what they miss is it’s not their lack of skill that’s holding them back, it’s their belief system.

Thanks Michaele! I appreciate the kind words. And I think I’m going to borrow the “too hard” basket analogy/metaphor.

    Hey Vanessa,

While it’s true that you may not be better than others in the sense that they could do what you did, you certainly are DIFFERENT from the masses who would talk about doing what you’ve accomplished, perhaps dream about it but never get around to actually putting in the effort.

Your story is truly inspirational… you deserve all the good things that are coming your way!

    • VaNessa Duplessie

Thanks Bob. I want to inspire others that they can do it too. It takes more than want. It takes Action. Sounds kind of trite at times but it it true. People sitting on the couch watching hours and hours of TV want a million dollars but they aren’t taking the actions to get there.

    • VaNessa Duplessie

Thanks Bob. I was hoping to show some inspiration. People can want all kinds of things but until they take action they won’t get there. The person watching 12 hours of TV a day may want a million dollars but they aren’t taking the right actions to get there. It is all about movement and action towards your dreams. Sometimes that is intense action sometimes that is daily baby steps.
